What Is a Rainscreen System?
A rainscreen system is a smart way to clad (cover) the outside of a building so that it stays dry and lasts decades longer, even in driving rain, snow, or coastal storms.
Here’s the basic idea:
Most buildings have two separate layers on the exterior:
- The inner wall (the real weather barrier)
This is the structural wall (wood framing, steel, concrete, etc.) wrapped with insulation and a true waterproof layer (usually a high-quality housewrap or fluid-applied membrane).
2. The outer layer (the rainscreen cladding)
This is what you actually see: brick, wood siding, metal panels, fiber-cement boards, stucco, or stone. The key is that this outer layer is deliberately held an inch or two away from the inner wall by a continuous air gap (called the rainscreen cavity).
That gap is what makes it a true “rainscreen.”
Why the gap matters:
- The outer cladding blocks the majority of wind-driven rain (90–95 % of the water never gets past it).
- Any water or vapor that does get behind the cladding (through joints, cracks, or capillary action) lands in the open cavity instead of soaking into the wall.
- Gravity pulls the water down the back of the cladding and out through weep holes or open joints at the bottom.
- The cavity is ventilated top and bottom, so moving air dries out any remaining moisture quickly, preventing rot, mold, and corrosion.
In short: the cladding acts as a rain “screen,” not a perfect seal. The real waterproofing happens at the inner layer, and the gap keeps everything ventilated and drained.
A common example you’ve probably seen is commercial buildings with metal or composite panels mounted on clips or rails.
Benefits that builders and architects love:
- Dramatically reduces water damage and callbacks.
- Extends the life of the cladding and the structure (50–100+ years is common).
- Improves energy efficiency (the ventilated gap reduces solar heat gain in summer).
- Allows bolder designs with open joints that would leak horribly without a rainscreen.
So, a rainscreen system isn’t just one product; it’s a building science principle: keep bulk water on the outside, manage anything that gets through with drainage and ventilation, and protect the actual structure with a layer deeper.
It’s one of those “simple but brilliant” details that separates buildings that fall apart in 20 years from ones that look great a century later.
Why Every Engage Building Products System Comes with a True Rainscreen Built Right In
At Engage Building Products, we don’t treat the rainscreen as an optional “upgrade” you have to remember to add. We believe every exterior should be protected the right way from day one. That’s why all three of our flagship cladding lines – EasyTrim Reveals®, FastPlank™, and QuickPanel™ – are engineered as complete drained-and-ventilated rainscreen systems straight out of the box.
No extra furring strips to buy, no complicated detailing to figure out, and no cutting corners. Just fast, foolproof installation and decades of proven moisture protection.
- EasyTrim Reveals® is a trim system engineered with integrated furring spacers that create and maintain a consistent drainage and ventilation gap behind whatever cladding you choose. These built-in spacers ensure a continuous vertical cavity—supporting upward airflow, faster drying, and reliable moisture management across the entire wall. Because the spacers are part of the trim profiles themselves, installers never need separate furring strips, improvised shims, or added components to meet true rainscreen best practices. You get crisp, shadow-line architectural reveals and code-compliant performance in one elegant package.
- FastPlank™ Perfect for homeowners and builders who want the warm look of real wood without the upkeep. FastPlank is a high-density aluminum plank system with authentic wood-grain finishes. Every plank snaps into hidden fasteners that double as spacers, automatically delivering a full ¾” rainscreen cavity—no measuring, no shimming. Installation is up to three times faster than traditional siding, and the 40-year finish warranty is possible because water never sits against the wall assembly.
- QuickPanel™ When speed and budget matter most, QuickPanel delivers sleek, modern panelized aesthetics in a fraction of the time. These large-format fiber-cement or aluminum-composite panels slide into precision extruded aluminum trims; backplates are fastened to the wall, then top caps snap securely into the backplates to lock everything in place. This clever design creates a true 1″ ventilated cavity across the entire façade. A single crew can often side an entire house in just days, and the hidden ventilation satisfies even the toughest coastal and high-wind zone codes.
Whether you’re working on a luxury custom build, a multi-family development, or your own forever home, Engage systems give you stunning, low-maintenance exteriors plus real, built-in moisture protection that lasts 50+ years—because a proper rainscreen isn’t an add-on with us. It’s standard for everything we make.
